prep, john kerry once again played mitt romney in debate prep. did he have to adjust his performance at all based on what he saw mitt romney do in the first debate? >> well, i mean, look. obviously, we've gamed out different scenarios like mitt romney suggesting he doesn't have a $5 trillion tax plan or suggesting he's got a health care plan that covers pre-existing conditions. all of which we know, and knew that weren't true. and look, if all we did was try to keep mitt romney from walking away from his positions and keeping him honest tonight, it would be a full-time job, but it's part of what the president will do. >> i want to talk to you as someone who used to work in the white house, as you did. there's no one i know who has worked with the president in the white house thinks that presidential debates reveal presidential skills. presidential debates reward memorization, which is utterly meaningless in the presidency. it rewards your ability to make a statement without consulting anyone else. presidents are never without their staff and cabi

he can't let romney control this debate and that's what i think romney's going to try to do. paint the picture. you're talking about not only explaining what you did, what you inherited, this fiscal mess, the number of jobs you created, but where you're going to lead this country and then contrast that strongly and put romney on the defensive about the fact how can you actually tell the american people that the policies you support, which are the same that created this mess, are going to lead us to a different direction and then don't filibuster. i love the president, but boy, he has a tendency to go on and on in some of those questions and in a debate, that can get you in trouble. >> get in, get out. new polling is showing mitt romney has narrowed the gap. good news for him. in the last two weeks and your tips, you said the governor needs to show passion for the country and it people. what does he say to voters to do that because there is still the sting from that 47% remark that people are not walking away from that is resognating. >> one of the things we often had conversa

i think the best thing to happen to romney was that first debate. you had 70 million people who finally saw him, not the caricature in the tv ads. they saw him in the flesh. i'll tell you what, i have been talking to a lot of swing folks in places like new hampshire, places like florida last couple days. operatives in both parties in those swing states, and they say that was a huge moment because for the first time people saw, yes, this is somebody who could be a plausible alternative. it doesn't mean they were willing to sort of buy the house right there, but, yeah, i can live here. >> they let him in the house. once you let him in the house, it's hard to say get out of the house. >> here is a fun little nugget -- >> he's sitting on the recliner. >> here is a fun nugget about the first debate. the time between the first and second debate, it's the longest period of time between a first and second debate since 1988. that's also what hurt the president and helped romney. he got two weeks of momentum out of this debate. the president needed -- >> they

mitt romney, well, he tried to get away with the actual debate. it wasn't too funny. and i said it would cause him problems. >> no doubt, maitt romney was a his best tonight but it's not good enough. when you take what he said tonight and compare it to his proposals, to what he has said, to what he's represented, to the ryan plan, it does not match what he said tonight. so how are we going to be impressed with someone that made a very passionate and a very articulate series of lies tonight? there's been so much focus on the president's debate performance but i continue to believe that governor romney did serious damage to his candidacy that night. he boxed himself in on tax cuts, on health care, on regulation. this was an "snl" worthy performance. if my friends upstairs are listening, they ought to let governor romney audition. look at that. he'd fit right in. i hear he really nails the impersonation of a moderate. "snl" made me laugh but the last laugh will be on governor romney because he will find out on election night that when it comes to medicare and medicaid an
